Youth vs Adult: How Sizing Works
One of the most common questions we get — especially from parents buying for the first time — is whether to go with youth or adult gear. Here's how to decide.
When to Use Youth Sizing
Youth equipment is designed for players roughly ages 7–14. It's not just smaller — it's built with different proportions, lighter materials, and less bulk. If the player weighs under 55 kg (120 lbs) and is under 165 cm (5'5"), youth sizing is usually the right call.
When to Move to Adult
Once a player is around 14–15 years old and hitting adult proportions — typically 60+ kg and 170+ cm — adult equipment usually fits better and offers more protection. Many high school and junior programs in Europe require adult-certified helmets.
Key Differences by Product
Product | Youth | Adult |
Helmets | Smaller shell sizes (XS–M), lighter weight, NOCSAE youth certified | Full size range (S–XL), heavier, NOCSAE adult certified |
Shoulder Pads | Narrower shoulder widths, lighter foam, less coverage area | Wider coverage, denser padding, position-specific options |
Gloves | Sizes YS–YXL, shorter fingers, narrower palm | Sizes S–XXL, longer fingers, wider palm |
Cleats | Sizes typically up to EU 38, lower ankle height | EU 39+, more stud configurations, stiffer construction |
In Between Sizes?
If a player is in that transition zone (ages 13–15), it depends on their build. Send us the player's age, height, and weight and we'll tell you which category fits best for each piece of gear.
