ULEZ and CAZ

Ultra Low Emission Zone and Clean Air Zone

Updated over a week ago

These are both government-led programs designed to improve air quality in some of the UK's major cities. Here's a guide explaining what each of these means to you as a driver.

What is ULEZ?
The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is a designated area within London where vehicles must meet strict emissions standards to avoid a daily charge. As of August 2023, the ULEZ covers all London boroughs but excludes the M25 motorway. If your vehicle doesn't meet the required emissions standards, you'll need to pay a daily charge of £12.50 to drive within this zone. The Rooster app can help you check if your vehicle is ULEZ-compliant and, if not, allows you to manage and pay the necessary charges directly through the app.

What is a Clean Air Zone (CAZ)?
Clean Air Zones (CAZ) are areas in various UK cities aimed at reducing air pollution by charging vehicles that don't meet specific emissions standards. Cities with active CAZs include Birmingham, Bath, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield, and Tyneside (Newcastle and Gateshead). The charges and affected vehicle types vary by city. With the Rooster app, you can check if your vehicle complies with the emissions standards of a specific CAZ and, if necessary, handle any charges directly through the app.
