A "black box" (officially known as a telematics device) is essentially a digital witness for your driving habits. Insurance companies use it to build a profile of how risky—or safe—you are behind the wheel.
While different providers track slightly different metrics, most black boxes monitor the following core data points:
1. Speed
This is the most critical metric. The device uses GPS to compare your speed against the legal limit of the road you are on. Constant speeding or "bursts" of high speed will negatively impact your driving score.
2. Braking and Acceleration
The device contains an accelerometer that measures G-force.
Harsh Braking: Frequent "slamming" on the brakes suggests you may not be looking far enough ahead or are following other cars too closely.
Rapid Acceleration: Flooring the gas pedal is often flagged as aggressive driving.
3. Cornering
Similar to braking, the device detects the force used when turning. Taking corners at high speeds—causing high lateral G-force—is recorded as a risk factor.
4. Time of Day (Curfews)
Statistically, driving late at night (typically between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM) is more dangerous due to fatigue and lower visibility. Some policies may penalize you for driving during these hours, while others simply "weight" those miles as higher risk.
5. Mileage and Location
Total Mileage: It tracks how much you drive relative to the annual mileage you declared.
Road Types: It notes whether you spend most of your time on motorways (statistically safer) or narrow rural roads (statistically more dangerous).
Trip Frequency: Taking many short trips vs. one long journey can occasionally influence your profile.
