How do "Phone Pickups" work?

And why are my phone pickups so inflated?

What is a "Pickup"

"Pickups" in the Screen Time report is a metric that tracks how many times you physically interact with your device in some way that wakes or turns on the screen.

Why "Pickup" counts can be inflated

A pickup is recorded any time your iPhone's screen turns on, including:

  • Raise to Wake (lifting your phone)

  • Tap to Wake (tapping the screen on supported models)

  • Button presses (side or home button)

  • Notifications lighting up your screen

  • StandBy/Nightstand mode activations when on charging stands

That's why counts can seem higher than expected—many come from unintentional wake-ups, especially overnight when your phone is charging.

Quick ways to reduce "Pickups"

  • Turn off Raise to Wake → Settings → Display & Brightness

  • Turn off Tap to Wake → Settings → Accessibility → Touch

  • Limit Lock Screen notifications so your screen doesn't light up unnecessarily

  • Use Focus/Do Not Disturb during inactive times

  • Turn off automatic StandBy → Settings → StandBy (this can dramatically reduce overnight phantom pickups from charging stands)

Check if your data syncs correctly:

  • In Roots, tap the refresh icon at the top-right of your Home tab

  • Compare this with Settings → Screen Time → See All App & Website Activity to see if Apple is also showing inflated numbers
