Can I split an app's time limit into different periods of the day?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

We're here to help.

First off, we know this can be frustrating and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

We are working on adding the ability to ration time throughout the day instead of using it all at once. Stay tuned for updates!

In the meantime, you might find the "All Day Blocking with Limited Unblocks" setting helpful — it’s not quite session-based, but it’s pretty close.

Here’s how to set it up:

  • Open the Roots app

  • Go to Blocking > Create a new block

  • Choose "All Day (Limited Unblocks)"

  • Add your apps to this block

  • Set the unblock time limit to 5 or 10 minutes

  • Set the number of unblocks to a low number (e.g. 2–3 per day)

  • For maximum impact, enable "Monk Mode" — this will prevent any further unblocking once you’ve hit your daily limit

This setup will let you check your apps in short, intentional bursts — and help avoid those longer scroll sessions that sneak up on all of us.
