Why is a non-adult site being blocked under “Block Adult Content”?

Updated this week

We're here to help.

First off, we know this can be frustrating — and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

When you enable "Block Adult Content" in Roots, you're activating Apple's built-in filtering system through their Screen Time API. This system is designed to block access to adult websites across Safari and other browsers. Apple maintains and updates this blocklist directly, not Roots.

So why might a non-adult site be blocked?

While Apple’s filtering is generally effective, a few customers have reported cases where non-explicit sites — like dating sites — are mistakenly blocked. Even if a site doesn’t contain adult content, Apple’s system may flag it based on certain keywords or themes.

Unfortunately, Roots doesn’t have visibility into or control over the specific domains that Apple includes in their filtering.

What can I do if a site is blocked by mistake?

Temporarily disable “Block Adult Content” in Roots

You can do this by going to: "Roots > Blocking > Blocking Settings (top right of the screen) > Block Adult Content > Toggle Off"

This will send a request to the Roots team to disable “Block Adult Content.” Once it’s turned off, you’ll be able to access the blocked site. You can always turn it back on once you're done.
