We're here to help.
We understand you'd like to receive notifications and messages from apps like Instagram while they're blocked, without being able to open them. Unfortunately, this isn't possible due to how Apple's Screen Time API works.
Why this limitation exists
When Roots blocks an app, it uses Apple's Screen Time system, which doesn't allow separating "receiving notifications" from "opening the app." It's all or nothing - if an app is blocked, you can't open it, even just to read notifications or messages.
This is an Apple limitation, not something we have control over in Roots.
Helpful workaround: Use short unblocks to check messages
While we can't enable notifications without app access, here's a practical solution that gives you intentional access without falling into endless scrolling:
Set up "All Day (Limited Unblocks)" with short time windows:
Block the app all day using "All Day (Limited Unblocks)"
Allow 2-3 unblocks per day with 5-minute duration each
When you need to check notifications or respond to messages, use one of those brief unblocks
Enable "Monk Mode" for maximum effectiveness - this prevents you from exceeding your daily unblock limit
How to set this up:
Go to Roots > Blocking > Add a Block (top of screen)
Select "All Day (Limited Unblocks)"
Choose the apps you want to block (e.g., Instagram, TikTok)
Set "Unblocks allowed per day" to 2-3
Set "Duration options" to 5 minutes
Under "Difficulty" choose "Monk Mode"
Save your settings
Why this works
This setup creates the friction needed to avoid mindless scrolling, while still letting you stay on top of important messages. The 5-minute windows are long enough to check and respond to messages, but short enough to prevent getting pulled into endless scrolling.
