Great question! This is actually one of Roots' most important features, not a limitation.
How unblocks work
When you use any type of "Blocking", you need to actively open the Roots app each time you want to temporarily unblock.
You won't see unblock prompts on the block screen. This is 100% intentional.
Why this friction helps
This small bit of friction is designed to break the autopilot habit of mindlessly opening apps.
When you have to actively open Roots and request an unblock, it creates a crucial pause where you can ask yourself: "Do I really need this right now?"
Many people find this intentional friction makes a huge difference in reducing mindless scrolling while still giving them access when they genuinely need it.
It's what makes Roots blocks so effective for breaking phone addiction patterns.
If this doesn't fit your needs
If you want more flexibility, here are some alternatives:
"Time Limit" blocks
Use apps freely until you hit your daily time limit
Great if you want to track usage rather than create immediate barriers
"Downtime" blocks
Block apps during specific times of day (like work hours or bedtime)
Apps remain freely accessible during other hours
Perfect for time-based boundaries without all-day restrictions
