Why can't I log out of Roots?

Updated over a week ago

If you're trying to log out of Roots but can't, it's likely because you're currently in "Monk Mode" with an active block running.

The rule:

  • In "Monk Mode": You cannot log out while blocking is active

  • In normal blocking: You can log out while blocking is active

This is by design - "Monk Mode" prevents logging out as one of its stricter enforcement features to help you stay committed to your screen time goals.

How to log out if you're in "Monk Mode":

If you need to log out while "Monk Mode" is active, here are your options:

1) Wait for your block to end

Once your scheduled "Monk Mode" session ends, the restriction will automatically lift and you'll be able to log out normally.

2) Use a "Pause"

  • Go to Roots > Blocking > Pause (top of the screen)

  • This will temporarily pause all your blocking

  • You'll then be able to log out

  • Remember: "Pauses" are designed for genuine needs, not regular use

Why this restriction exists:

Logging out could be used as a workaround to escape active blocks, which would defeat the purpose of "Monk Mode." The intentional friction helps you stay committed to your screen time goals.

Quick tip:

If you need more flexibility to log in and out, consider using "Normal Mode" for your blocks instead of "Monk Mode."
