A website I blocked is still accessible

Updated this week

We're here to help.

First off, we know this can be frustrating. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

When you add a website to a block in Roots, it should be blocked across all browsers on your device - Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and any others. If that's not happening, here are a few steps to get it working.

1) Reload blocking

This refreshes Roots' connection to Apple "Screen Time" and often resolves the issue right away.

  1. Open the Roots app

  2. Tap Help (at the top of the screen)

  3. Tap Reload Blocking

Wait a few seconds, then check if the website is now blocked.

2) Still not working? Block the app

If reloading doesn't help, try adding the app instead to your block. For example, if you’re trying to block YouTube.com, try blocking the YouTube app instead. Blocking the app prevents access to the website also.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Roots > Blocking

  2. Tap the edit icon on your existing block (or create a new one)

  3. Under What to Block, search for the app (e.g., "Youtube")

  4. Select it and save

This is a reliable workaround and ensures the website can't be accessed through any browser.

Why does this happen?

Website blocking in Roots works system-wide across all browsers. In some cases, Apple's "Screen Time" API needs a moment to apply the restriction - which is why a reload usually fixes it. If the issue persists, blocking the app itself is a good workaround.
