If you are having trouble with the app selector crashing, we apologize for the inconvenience! This is a know bug with Apple's app picker, and we've reported the bug.
Here are a few things that will help:
1) Force quit apps running in background
Swipe up and hold, and then close as many apps as possible
Restart your phone
Open Roots (no other apps should be running in the background at this point)
This will make the app selector work better and help with load times
After restarting, please try the selector again
2) Try to work around the issue
Use the "voice dictation" option in the app selector "search" bar
Copy and paste the full name of the app in the app selector "search" bar
Open notes, type the app name, then copy & paste
3) Optimize for better performance
Step 1: Turn off app icons in Roots
Go to Roots > Profile > Settings and toggle off 'Display app icons'
(at least until you are able to make the selections)
Step 2: Lighten the memory load on your phone
Turn off low power mode if it's enabled
Delete unused apps from your phone (we know, it's annoying, so sorry!)
Restart your phone
Then, try picking apps again
Step 3: Update to the latest versions
Make sure you are on the latest version of iOS
Update to the latest version of Roots here
Restart your phone
Then, try picking apps again
Step 4: Try using the "Simple App Picker"
Go to 'Profile' > 'Settings' > 'Simple App Picker' and turn it on
This simple version will remove app groups and simplify selection to should improve performance
If none of these work, sometimes it helps to wait a little while and then come back.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1) Selections are saved even if app picker crashes
The picker works for a few seconds when expanding categories—select apps quickly and tap "Save" before it crashes. Even if it shows an error, you can still save your selection.
2) Use App Groups for Easier Selection
We recommend using 'App groups' to select apps so you don't need to use the app selector anymore after you have made the initial selections (assuming you can get it to work once with the steps above).
3) Why is this happening?
It appears to crash when too many results appear at once, and is related to having a lot of apps on your phone, and/or low memory on your device. This is a known bug in Apple's picker that impacts all screen time apps.
