The "app selector" is crashing when picking apps

Are you having issues when trying to select apps?

Updated today

If you are having trouble with the app selector crashing, we apologize for the inconvenience! This is a know bug with Apple's app picker, and we've reported the bug.

Here are a few things that will help:

1. Force quit apps running in background:

  • Swipe up and hold, and then close as many apps as possible

  • This will make the app selector work better and help with load times

  • After quitting other apps, please try the selector again

2. Ways to work around the issue:

  • 1) Use the "voice dictation" option in the app selector "search" bar

  • 2) Copy and paste the full name of the app in the app selector "search" bar

    • Open notes, type the app name, then copy & paste

3. Other ways to optimize for performance

Step 1: Lighten the memory load on your phone

  • Turn off low power mode if it's enabled

  • Delete unused apps from your phone

  • (we know, it's annoying, so sorry!)

  • Restart your phone

  • Then, try picking apps again

Step 2: update to the latest versions

  • Make sure you are on the latest version of iOS

  • Update to the latest version of Roots here

  • Restart your phone

  • Then, try picking apps again

If none of these work, sometimes it helps to wait a little while and then come back.

Why is this happening?

It appears to crash when too many results appear at once, and is related to having a lot of apps on your phone, and/or low memory on your device. This is a known bug in Apple's picker that impacts all screen time apps.

Still having issues?

If it continues to crash please message us, we would love to get a screen recording of what you are seeing and send you an amazon gift card to help us troubleshoot further!
