What is Orlistat?

Orlistat (brand names: Prolistat, Xenical, Alli) is a weight-loss medication that helps reduce fat absorption in your digestive system. It works best when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

How to Take Orlistat

  • Take one capsule with each main meal (up to three times daily).

  • Swallow with water during or within 1 hour after eating.

  • Skip a dose if your meal contains no fat or if you skip a meal.

Diet Tips for Success

  • Keep fat intake below 30% of total energy to prevent side effects.

  • Eat lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • Take a multivitamin (A, D, E and K) daily to replace fat-soluble vitamins.

Avoid High-Fat Foods (to prevent side effects like oily stools & diarrhoea) - such as:

  • Fried foods

  • Fast food

  • Fatty cuts of meat

  • Butter, cream, full-fat dairy

  • Pastries, processed snacks, and chocolate

Exercise Guidelines

  • Aim for 150–300 minutes of moderate exercise per week (walking, cycling, swimming).

  • Include strength training 2–3 times per week to maintain muscle.

Possible Side Effects

  • Oily stools, increased bowel movements, or stomach cramps (caused by high-fat intake).

  • If severe side effects occur, contact your healthcare provider.

Key Reminders

  • Orlistat is a tool—not a magic pill! Combine it with a healthy lifestyle for the best results.

  • Be patient—weight loss takes time and consistency.

  • Need help? Speak to your doctor, dietitian or pharmacist for guidance.

  • Stay committed and take it one step at a time!
