This article applies to the older Nomad Insurance Essential plan version effective September 2025. If you are not sure which plan version you are under, please check with our Customer Care team.
Pre-existing illnesses or injuries are not covered by Nomad Insurance, except as described in "Emergency treatment of a pre-existing illness or injury."
Emergency treatment of a pre-existing condition will not be covered if the condition is either incurable or expected to get worse over time.
Here are the conditions for this benefit:
You have a sudden and unexpected emergency which has a short duration, is rapidly progressive, and requires urgent treatment.
You seek treatment within 24 hours of the unexpected emergency.
The illness or injury must neither be incurable nor expected to become worse over time. For example, we will not be able to cover emergency treatment of a pre-existing illness or injury such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease.
How is a pre-existing condition defined?
A pre-existing condition is any illness or injury to which one of the following applies:
You received a prior diagnosis or treatment for the illness or injury within 2 years before the start date.
You experienced symptoms within 2 years before the start date.*
There is reasonable medical certainty (more likely than not) that the illness or injury existed within 2 years before the start date. This means that even without your knowledge, it can be considered a pre-existing illness or injury.*
*If you renew your Nomad Insurance Essential plan after having reached 364 consecutive days of coverage, conditions 2 and 3 above will not apply to you, except for non-pre-existing illness or injuries.
A condition does not have to be known to exist.
