What are informational and transactional keywords?

Read this guide to understand the difference between these two types of keywords

Updated over a year ago

One of our users' most common questions is about the difference between informational and transactional keywords. Let's break it down:

1. Informational Keywords

Definition: Keywords users typically search for information, understanding, or answers.

Characteristics:

  • The intent of the searcher is to gain information or learn.

  • Search results are predominantly filled with blog posts, guides, how-to articles, resources, tutorials, and other informative content.

Examples:

  • "How to fix a leaky faucet?"

  • "History of the electric guitar."

  • "Best ways to store fresh produce."

In the platform's context: If the first page of Google's search results for a keyword only shows informational pages (like blogs or guides), then we categorize it as an 'Informational' keyword.

2. Transactional Keywords

Definition: Keywords users type in when they are closer to making a purchase or are considering a transaction.

Characteristics:

  • The searchers intent is to buy, sign up, or engage in a transaction.

  • Search results primarily feature product pages, category pages, service pages, or other transaction-focused content.

Examples:

  • "Buy organic coffee beans online."

  • "Affordable website design services."

  • "Yoga mat sale."

In the platform's context: If the first page of Google's search results for a keyword predominantly features transactional pages (like product or service pages), we label it as a 'Transactional' keyword.

3. Mixed Keywords

In some cases, the line between informational and transactional intent blurs, leading to a mix of both types of content on the first page of search results.

Definition: Keywords for which the search results show a combination of both informational and transactional pages.

Examples:

  • "Digital camera tips." (You might find both buying guides (transactional) and usage tips (informational) on the first page.)

  • "Natural skincare." (This could lead to both informational articles on natural skincare benefits and product pages for natural skincare items.)

In the platform's context: If the first page of Google's search results displays both transactional and informational pages, we categorize the keyword as 'Mixed'.
