Liability accounts in Sequence represent money you owe - like credit cards, loans, or other debts.
There are two types of liabilities in Sequence, and they behave a little differently.
Direct Liabilities
With non-manual liabilities, Sequence sends funds directly to your provider (like your credit card company).
When you see dollars moving into a liability block on your Money Map, those funds are going straight to the provider.
Transfers to a direct liability typically take 2–5 banking days to fully process, depending on the provider, so plan your automations accordingly.
Manual Liabilities
Some providers don’t allow third-party payments. In these cases, Sequence uses a manual liability setup.
Here’s how it works:
Sequence deposits the funds into a designated holding Pod (think of it like a staging basket).
Your provider then pulls the funds from that Pod using the routing and account numbers you provide.
So while it may look like Sequence is paying the liability, what’s really happening is:
Sequence stages the money in the holding Pod
Your provider will need to finish the job by pulling the funds out
Transfer times for manual liabilities:
From a Sequence account → funds hit the holding Pod instantly
From an external account → funds take 2–3 business days to land in the holding Pod
In both cases, once the funds are in the holding pod, your provider can pull the funds out instantly
How to Set Up Payments for a Manual Liability
To make sure your provider can collect from the holding Pod:
Go to your provider’s payment settings.
Set up AutoPay or a scheduled payment.
Choose to pay from an external account.
Enter the routing and account numbers of the holding Pod
If adding manually, enter Thread Bank as the bank name
If adding through Plaid, search for Sequence and you should find us
Where to Find Routing & Account Numbers
To get the payment details for a manual liability:
Click into the liability block in your Money Map.
You’ll see two balances:
Current Balance (what you owe)
Sequence Account Balance (what’s staged in the holding Pod)
Just below the Sequence Account Balance, you’ll find:
Beneficiary name
Routing number
Account number
Use these details when setting up AutoPay with your provider.
