What is an investment account?
An investment account is any account where you hold assets like stocks, bonds, ETFs, or retirement funds.
These include things like brokerage accounts, IRAs, or 401(k)s.
By linking them in Sequence, you can see your balances alongside your checking, savings, and liabilities.
Why investment accounts are “destination only”
Most investment accounts in Sequence are treated as destination only.
That means we can send funds into them, but we don’t pull money back out.
Here’s why:
The balance displayed includes both cash holdings and invested assets.
We cannot differentiate between between these two types of funds.
When you send money into an investment account, it lands in the linked checking account and becomes part of your available cash holdings.
This setup keeps transfers safe and predictable, while still letting you automate contributions.
Transfer times
Transfers to investment accounts are sent via ACH.
ACH typically takes 1–3 business days.
Once the funds arrive, they show up as cash holdings in your investment account.
Some investment accounts may require extra setup steps depending on the institution.
Check out the Investment Accounts by Institution Setup page for more details.
A note of caution: setup steps
Most investment accounts require a little extra setup before they’re fully linked.
In many cases, you’ll need to manually type in the routing and account numbers to verify the account.
If any of the following apply:
Your institution doesn’t provide routing or account numbers
Your account number includes letters instead of only numbers
You can’t find your institution at all
…then you’ll need to check out the Investment Accounts by Institution Setup page for connection-specific instructions.
Connecting investment accounts makes it easier to see both your short-term finances and your long-term growth in one place.
Next, we’ll go deeper into how to set up investment accounts by institution so you’re ready to automate contributions.
