Transfer a Kids Account

Kids Accounts can be transferred to the kid when they reach the transfer age, or if they request control after they turn 18.

Transfer age

By default, the transfer age is 25 years old for new Kids Accounts. You can update this to any age between 18 and 25 years old by going to Settings > Transfer age in the Kids Account.

Once the kid reaches 18:

  • you can no longer adjust the transfer age

  • they’re able to request control of their account at any time without your permission.

If the kid doesn’t want to take control at 18, you can continue to operate the bare trust account for their benefit until they reach the transfer age.

How to transfer the account to the kid

The adult (or the kid) can initiate the transfer process by emailing us at help@sharesies.co.nz.

The email needs to include the following:

  • the email address to use for the new login

  • a copy or photo of the kid's photo ID (an Australian passport, Australian driver licence, or a certified copy of an overseas passport).

We’ll then email both the adult and the kid with confirmation that the transfer process has started.

Both the adult and the kid will need to follow the instructions in the email to complete the transfer process.

Once this happens, we’ll convert the bare trust account to an account in the kid’s name, and they can manage their own portfolio.
