You can transfer shares from a Shareholder Reference Number (SRN) or Holder Identification Number (HIN) into and out of Sharesies.

ASX-listed shares

You can transfer shares that are listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) from a Shareholder Reference Number (SRN) or Holder Identification Number (HIN) into and out of Sharesies.

Request a share transfer

  1. Log in to Sharesies.

  2. Go to your investment portfolio > Manage > Transfer shares.

  3. Select Transfer in or Transfer out.

  4. Select ASX from the list of exchanges.

  5. Add your SRN/HIN, and if needed, your Tax File Number (TFN).

  6. If you’re doing a HIN transfer, you will need to add the PID—here’s a list of PIDs.

  7. Check and confirm that your name and address match those on your Holding Statement.

  8. Enter the investment(s) that you want to transfer.

  9. Enter the date, price paid per share, and the number of shares to transfer for each parcel of shares received (a ‘parcel’ being the number of shares purchased at any one time).

  10. Confirm that the details are correct in the summary.

  11. Print and sign the transfer form with a black or blue pen—we cannot accept digital signatures—then upload a clear image of the signed form.

  12. Upload your Holding Statement and valid ID.

  13. Submit the application.

  14. Once requested, transfers usually take between 15-30 business days to complete. We’ll contact you if we need anything more from you.You don’t need to complete the process in one session—you can save your progress along the way.

Confirming your SRN transfer with a share registry

When you transfer shares to an SRN, the share registry that holds your shares will mail you a confirmation letter. This letter is sent to the address you put on your Sharesies transfer form, and you’ll receive a separate letter for each investment you transfer.

If you don’t receive your confirmation letter and want to confirm your holdings, you’ll need to contact the relevant share registry:

  1. Search for and select the investment you want to query.

  2. Locate the relevant share registry’s contact details.

  3. Get in touch with them to confirm your holding for that investment.

Joint, Trust, or Company SRNs

We’re only able to accept transfers from individual SRN/HINs. We do not accept transfers from joint SRN/HINs, trusts, or companies.

US shares

Request a share transfer

  1. Log in to Sharesies.

  2. Top up your Wallet or exchange currencies so you have enough USD to cover the share transfer fee.

  3. Go to your investment portfolio > Manage > Transfer shares.

  4. Select Transfer in or Transfer out.

  5. Select NYSE, NASDAQ or CBOE from the list of stock exchanges.

  6. Select the transfer type.

  7. Add your brokerage account number, and if you want, your tax file number (TFN).

  8. Check and confirm that your name matches the one on your account statement.

  9. Enter the investment(s) that you want to transfer.

  10. Enter the date, price paid per share, and the number of shares to transfer for each parcel of shares received.

  11. Confirm that the details are correct in the summary.

  12. If prompted—download and fill out a transfer form. This can be done digitally.

  13. Upload a clear image of your brokerage account statement, and your completed transfer form if needed. Then submit your request.

  14. Contact the platform that holds your shares to inform them of your transfer. You can direct them to transfers@sharesies.co.nz if they have any questions.

  15. Once we’ve received all the correct info, transfers usually take 5-10 business days to complete. We’ll contact you if we need anything more from you.

You don’t need to complete the process in one session—you can save your progress along the way.

NZX-listed shares

You can transfer shares that are listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) from a Common Shareholder Number (CSN) or Holder Number (HN) into Sharesies.

You can only transfer NZX-listed shares out of Sharesies to a CSN—Sharesies doesn’t support share transfers to an HN.

Request a share transfer

  1. Log in to Sharesies.

  2. Go to your investment portfolio > Manage > Transfer shares.

  3. Select ‘Transfer in’ or ‘Transfer out’.

  4. Select ‘New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX)’ from the list of exchanges.

  5. If you’ve used a CSN or HN previously on Sharesies you can select this to transfer from (if you’re transferring shares out, you’ll only be able to select a CSN), or alternatively you can add a new one.

  6. Enter your CSN or HN, and your Faster Identification Number (FIN), along with the Sharesies account email addresses for any joint holders.

  7. If transferring in from a CSN, you can choose to transfer all the shares it holds or select the specific investments you want to transfer.

  8. Enter the number of shares you want to transfer. To transfer in, enter the amount of shares that you hold in that investment and the average price you paid for each share. If you don’t enter an average price when transferring in, we’ll use the latest close price. When transferring out, we'll use the average price you've paid per share.

  9. Select Next and review your transfer request. Once you’re good to go, confirm your transfer request.

  10. Once requested, it can take up to two business days for the share transfer to complete.

Jointly held CSNs and HNs

All transfers to or from a jointly held CSN or HN need to be approved by all joint holders.

Every joint holder will need to have a Sharesies account to give their approval for the transfer. We require this to verify their identity.

When requesting to transfer shares, you’ll need to confirm whether the CSN or HN is jointly held, and enter the Sharesies account email addresses for all joint holders.

Once you’ve made your transfer request, we’ll contact the joint holder(s) for their approval. We’ll only proceed with the transfer after we’ve received approval from all joint holders.

Transferring shares to or from a joint CSN or HN may take longer than two business days.
