The security of your Spend account and cards

Learn how Sharesies helps keep your Spend account safe, and what you can do to protect it.

Numberless cards

Spend cards don’t have a card number, expiry date, or security (CVC) code printed or displayed on them. These details are stored in the Sharesies app so that only you can access them, helping you protect your information if your card is lost or stolen.

Freeze or unfreeze your card

You can temporarily freeze a card in the app. Please freeze your card in-app and let us know immediately if it’s lost or stolen, or if you know or suspect that:

  • your card details are known to someone else or have been compromised;

  • there has been unauthorised access to or use of your Spend account.

You can see a history of your transactions in-app. If you don’t recognise a transaction or think there may be errors, or something suspicious with a payment (or you want to dispute a transaction), freeze your card in-app and let us know immediately.

To freeze or unfreeze your card:

  • login to Sharesies

  • go to Portfolio > Spend

  • select the card you’d like to freeze, then Freeze/Unfreeze.

Sharesies may also freeze or suspend your card or your Spend account (or both) if the activity on, or use of, your card or account appears suspicious, fraudulent or illegal. We’ll let you know if we do and what to do next.

Zero Liability Protection

Your liability for the unauthorised use of your Spend card may be limited by Mastercard’s Zero Liability Protection policy. As a Mastercard cardholder, under the Mastercard rules you won’t be held responsible for any transactions made with your Spend card that were not authorised by you if:

  • you’ve used reasonable care in protecting your card from loss or theft; and

  • upon becoming aware of loss or theft, you promptly reported such loss or theft to Sharesies.

In-app security controls

You can turn the following card features on or off in-app for extra security:

  • Online payments

  • ATM withdrawals

  • Contactless (tap) payments.

To manage your card security controls:

  • login to Sharesies

  • go to Portfolio > Spend

  • select a card and scroll to Security controls

  • toggle the controls on or off.

PIN security

If you enter your PIN incorrectly 3 times in a row at a payment terminal or ATM, your card will be blocked for 1 hour.

Spend and withdrawal limits

To help keep your account safe, your Spend card has some limits:

  • You can spend up to $5,000 NZD per day (this is the default, which you can change).

  • You can withdraw up to $2,000 NZD per day at an ATM.

Managing your spend limit

If you wish, you can set your own daily spend limit of any amount up to $50,000 NZD under Spend > Manage > Account limits. If no limit is set, the default daily limit of $5,000 applies.

If you ever need to make a payment over $50,000, you can ask us to temporarily increase your limit up to $70,000. Keep in mind there’ll be a short delay if you contact us outside business hours.

Spend limits apply to card transactions, including physical card purchases, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and online payments. They don't apply to transfers (e.g. to your Invest Wallet). The daily ATM withdrawal limits still apply, and cannot be changed.

Tips for using spend limits

  • Set your limit only slightly above what you'd typically spend in a day.

  • Temporarily increase your limit for larger one-off purchases like travel or furniture, then reduce it again once the purchase is complete.

  • Consider lowering your limit or using a virtual card when transacting with a new online merchant or using your card overseas.
