Automated PRO Number Assignment in Shipwell

Users are now able to configure their Shipwell tenant to automatically receive PRO numbers from LTL carriers at the time of dispatch or to generate PRO numbers from a pre-assigned block stored in the carrier profile.

PRO Number Assignment Configuration

In the Carrier profile screen, a new option called "Allow Pre PRO # assignment from carrier" is available. Checking this box will enable the system to request a PRO number from an LTL carrier at the time of dispatch. The PRO number will be automatically populated on the shipment when this feature is enabled.

PRO Number Generation within Shipwell (PRO Number Blocks)

Shippers can contact their LTL carrier and receive a block of PRO numbers to assign to shipments. When PRO numbers are stored in the system, each time the carrier is assigned to a shipment the next PRO# in the block will automatically be assigned.

PRO# information is stored on the carrier profile. The following fields are available:

  • Generate PRO Number from Shipwell (Checkbox) — enables all PRO block fields

  • PRO Number Prefix — alphanumeric prefix; not included in check digit calculation

  • PRO Number Start — starting number for the PRO block

  • PRO Number End — ending number for the PRO block

  • Last Used PRO Number — read-only field showing the last assigned PRO#

  • Notification Threshold — see below

  • Check Digit Determination — algorithm used (Mod 7, Mod 10, Mod 11, or None)

Notification Threshold — Low PRO Number Alert

The Notification Threshold field defines how many unassigned PRO numbers must remain before an alert is triggered.

How it works: If your PRO Number End is X and your notification threshold is set to 50, the system will send an email notification when the current unassigned PRO number count reaches 50 (i.e., when the assigned PRO reaches X−50).

Who receives the notification?

The notification email is sent to the user who configured the PRO number block on the carrier profile. This is the user whose account credentials were used when the "Generate PRO Number from Shipwell" settings were last saved on the carrier record.

Important: If you need to change who receives this alert, update the carrier profile (re-save the PRO number block settings) while logged in as the intended recipient user, or contact your Customer Success Manager to confirm the alert recipient for your account configuration.

Supported Carriers for Automated PRO Assignment

The following LTL carriers can provide a PRO number automatically at dispatch:

  • AACT — AAA Cooper

  • ABFS — ABF Freight

  • AVRT — Averitt Express

  • CNWY — XPO Logistics

  • CTII — Central Transport

  • DYLT — Daylight Transport

  • EXLA — Estes Express

  • FWDN — Forward Air

  • FXFE — FedEx Freight

  • ODFL — Old Dominion

  • PITD — Pitt Ohio

  • PYLE — A. Duie Pyle

  • RDFS — Roadrunner

  • RLCA — R&L Carriers

  • SAIA — Saia Motor

  • UPGF — UPS Freight

Printing the PRO Number

There are 2 methods for printing the barcoded PRO number on a shipment:

  1. If a PRO exists on the shipment, the Bill of Lading will automatically include a barcoded PRO number.

  2. Users can print shipping/pallet labels that include the barcoded PRO number.

Note: If the barcoded PRO number is not available when the driver picks up the freight, they may assign their own PRO number, which can result in a tracking sync failure between Shipwell and the carrier's system.
