Overview

Shipwell implemented robust MAWB (Master Airway Bill) Tracking to allow you to gain deeper insights and real-time visibility of your air shipments. You can now track the progress of your air cargo from origin to destination with greater accuracy and efficiency. To enable this service, please engage with your Customer Success Manager. This service may require additional charges to your base subscription for this level of Air tracking.

How it Works

Create Your Shipment or Build from Order: Easily create new air shipments within the Shipwell platform or select an order and create into an air shipment.
Enter MAWB: Provide the MAWB number for your shipment to initiate tracking.
Track in Real Time: Monitor your shipment's progress with real-time updates and notifications.
Access Detailed Insights: View comprehensive tracking information, including origin, destination, estimated arrival time, and more.

Create Your Shipment or Build from Order

Shipwell has introduced a new, user-friendly interface for creating air shipments. This enhanced experience includes:

A clear summary of the shipment and itinerary on the left side
A more intuitive interface for references and custom fields
The ability to add multiple stops at once and easily select addresses in your address book
Support for global addresses and airport codes (IATA)
New multi-day planning and appointment fields, as well as the removal of the required email and contact phone numbers on stops.
Introduction of a movement type field which will specify the type of shipment movement (Door to Door, Port to Port, Port to Door, or Door to Port)

Note that we will be transitioning other modes into this new, user-friendly interface over the coming releases.

You can also simply select an order, change to air, and add the movement type which will automatically build the shipment and take to you to the shipment details screen.

Initiating Air Visibility

Once an air shipment is created in the Shipwell system and a valid MAWB is supplied, air visibility will begin automatically once updates are available from the air cargo carriers. The format of the MAWB is XXX-YYYYYYYY where XXX is the 3-digit air cargo carrier prefix code and YYYYYYYY is the 8-digit numerical reference of the air cargo.

This tracking field is located in the shipment details page in the References section and must be filled in with a valid MAWB for tracking to begin. Once tracking has started, the system will automatically receive updates for the life cycle of the air cargo. Note that this tracking information is also available through our apis, event, and webhook systems.

Air Visibility Updates

All updates and key milestones related to your air shipments will be displayed on the Shipment Tracking tab as well as provided through our events, apis, and webhooks. These updates are received directly from the air cargo carriers as their systems record the information. You can expect to see multiple updates throughout the day. The following table lists the Shipwell code, description, timeline event type, and timeline description. Note that we are making updates to the timeline description to provide additional clarity and shipment information.

Note on Carrier Variations

Please keep in mind that different air carriers may have varying levels of adherence to all milestone events. This means that when tracking an AWB, you might experience fluctuations in the frequency of status updates. These differences are due to the specific processes and systems used by each airline to collect and share tracking data.

Shipwell is committed to providing you with all the tracking information that is made available by the airline. Therefore, any discrepancies in update frequency are beyond our control and reflect the practices of the individual carriers.

Shipment Status Updates

We've added additional shipment statuses to account for the new air mode on the Shipwell platform. Note that these are now organized by shipment lifecycle and color-coded to help with selection. Below is an image of current statuses.

Movement Type

Shipwell offers four distinct movement types for air (and future FCL and LCL shipments):

Door to Door: This option indicates that the shipment will be picked up from the shipper's location and delivered directly to the consignee's location.
Door to Port: In this case, the shipment will be picked up from the shipper's location and transported to the designated port for further shipping.
Port to Door: This movement type involves the shipment being delivered from the port to the consignee's location.
Port to Port: This option indicates that the shipment will be transported from one port to another without any land-based movement.

Impact of Movement Type on Shipment and Stop Statuses

The selected movement type will directly influence the status and events associated with the shipment and its stops. Here's a breakdown of how each movement type affects the shipment process:

Door to Door:
- The shipment will have a pickup stop at the shipper's location and a delivery stop at the consignee's location.
- The shipment status will transition through stages such as "Picked Up," "In Transit," and "Delivered."
- Stop statuses will include "Pending Pickup," "Picked Up," "In Transit," and "Delivered."
- The end status will real-time visibility will be "Available" and the shipment will not show delivered automatically until the freight forwarder or user manually changes the status after the final stop delivery is made.
Door to Port:
- The shipment will have a pickup stop at the shipper's location and a delivery stop at the port.
- The shipment status will transition through stages such as "Picked Up," "In Transit," and "Arrived at Port."
- Stop statuses will include "Pending Pickup," "Picked Up," "In Transit," and "Delivered to Port."
Port to Door:
- The shipment will have a pickup stop at the port and a delivery stop at the consignee's location.
- The shipment status will transition through stages such as "Arrived at Port," "In Transit," and "Delivered."
- Stop statuses will include "Pending Pickup from Port," "Picked Up from Port," "In Transit," and "Delivered."
Port to Port:
- The shipment will have pickup and delivery stops at different ports.
- The shipment status will transition through stages such as "Arrived at Origin Port," "In Transit," and "Arrived at Destination Port."
- Stop statuses will include "Pending Pickup from Origin Port," "Picked Up from Origin Port," "In Transit," and "Delivered to Destination Port."

By carefully selecting the appropriate movement type, you can ensure that the shipment process aligns with your specific shipping requirements and accurately reflects the planned route and logistics.

Automatic Shipment Status Changes

Shipwell will automatically transition the shipment status as real-time visibility events occur. Note that the transition of the statuses will be dependent on the air cargo carriers' adherence to the event standard.

Mapped Air Cargo Location Updates

As location updates are received, the latest location will be updated on the shipment tracking map. Depending on the air carrier, the system will update regularly throughout the lifecycle of the shipment. Hovering over any of the location points on the map will display the date and time of the location update. The external tracking link will also be updated for the Air Visiblity updates.

Additional Movement Details

Users will now have the ability to view additional MAWB movement details associated with their Air shipments. As part of our tracking service, we will get the air cargo itinerary and movement details associated with the MAWB. Since all of these fields are updated automatically by the Air Visibility tracking system, they are non-editable by users.

Updates to Shipment Dashboard

Both master airway bill and house airway bill have been added as reference types to the shipment dashboard. You can now add those columns and search for those fields. Note that the house airway bill will be used by Freight Forwarders and up-and-coming freight forwarder workflows. Both MAWB and HAWB are searchable.
