My recording was interrupted

If your recording on the Siro mobile app stopped early or paused for any reason, use this guide to help you troubleshoot

Written by Ethan Peterson-New

Overview

If you're experiencing issues with Siro recordings on the mobile app being interrupted or paused unexpectedly during appointments, this guide will help you identify and resolve common causes. These kinds of issues are generally rare, but a few simple tips can help you avoid them entirely.

If your recording completed successfully, but is taking longer than expected to upload, please see our documentation about recording uploads instead.

Note: the following troubleshooting steps are specific to mobile recordings via the Siro mobile app, not video recording on the Siro web app.

Basic Troubleshooting

The Siro app is designed to be able to record in the background, even with your device's screen turned off. However, certain known actions can cause recordings to shut off prematurely. The most common issues can be addressed by easily implemented best practices.

1. Avoid Microphone Conflicts

Any feature or app that takes over the microphone will interrupt your Siro recording temporarily.

Siro auto-resumes your recording once the microphone is available again, but be aware that we will not capture audio during these activities. After auto-resuming, the same recording will continue from the point at which it was interrupted.

Actions that can interrupt recordings:

  • Making or receiving phone calls

  • Recording video with either your built-in camera, or any other app that takes video

  • Connecting to Bluetooth audio devices (headphones, car systems, etc.)

    • Note: Once connected, Siro is fully compatible with the majority of Bluetooth devices. However, the connection process can cause temporary disruptions

Solutions:

  • Keep your device in Do Not Disturb mode during appointments

  • Connect to any Bluetooth audio devices before beginning recording

  • Avoid using the camera to take video while recording

2. Make Sure to Complete Recordings

Force-closing the app instead of completing the recording can cause data loss. This applies to a deliberate force-quit — swiping the app away. If a recording is instead interrupted or closed by the operating system, Siro pauses it in the background and prompts you to resume it when you reopen the app.

Solution:

  • Do not force-quit (swipe up) the Siro app during active recordings

  • Always tap the "Finish" button, then "Save & end recording" when done

3. Avoid Magnetic Cases

Unfortunately, certain types of cases can shut off recordings prematurely due to built-in iPad security features. You can find more information about magnetic cases and view alternatives in our help center article.

Solutions:

  • Avoid magnetic iPad cases, or leave magnetic cases off during recording

  • Use a vetted alternative case instead

4. Make Sure the Recording Has Started Before Moving to Background

If Siro is moved to the device's background too quickly after initiating a recording, the recording may not have time to start.

Solution:

  • Ensure you see the recording timer begin to count up before swiping to move the device to the background.

Advanced Troubleshooting

If you are following the above guidelines and still encountering issues, you may need to try some additional steps.

1. Check for Background App Interference

Other apps running simultaneously can overload your device's memory and interrupt recordings.

Solutions:

  • Before starting a recording, close all apps you're not actively using

  • If you need to use other apps during appointments (like appraisal tools, presentations, or your camera), try to minimize how many are open at once

2. Update and Restart the App

We are constantly improving the Siro mobile app, including our core recording functionality. If you haven't updated your app in a while, you may not be running the most recent and robust version.

Solution:

  • Head to the App Store or Google Play Store and hit "update" to install the new version

  • Quit and reopen the Siro app after updating

3. (Android only) Allow Unrestricted Background Usage

Android devices may be more likely to shut off background recording due to how their operating systems handle background application processes. If you are using an Android device and are still experiencing recording interruption issues after taking other troubleshooting steps, you can turn on "unrestricted background usage" for the Siro app. The steps for turning on this feature are as follows (though they can vary slightly depending on the device):

  1. Navigate to the device's Settings app

  2. Scroll down and press the "Apps" option

  3. Tap on the Siro app

  4. Under the "Usage" section, press "Battery"

  5. Select "Unrestricted"

In summary:

  • Prepare your device before each appointment by closing unnecessary apps

  • Keep your device updated with the latest phone software and Siro app versions

  • Avoid multitasking with microphone-intensive features during recordings

  • Monitor your device's storage to ensure adequate free space

  • Complete recordings properly every time rather than closing the app
