How to Export 3D Tiles from Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler

Updated today

Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler (formerly ContextCapture) is a reality modelling software that generates high-resolution 3D models from photographs and point clouds. It is widely used in infrastructure, construction, and surveying workflows.

This guide will walk you through the steps to export 3D Tiles from Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler, ensuring your output is ready for visualisation in SKAND.

Steps

  1. Open your project and navigate to the Production definition dialog. On the Name tab, enter a name and optional description for the production.

  2. On the Purpose tab, select Export 3D mesh. Leave the other options unchecked.

  3. On the Format/Options tab, set the following:

    1. Format: Cesium 3D Tiles

    2. Uncheck Generate Cesium base application

    3. Generate LOD across tiles: Toggled off

    4. Node size: 2XL

    5. Texture compression: 75-90% JPEG

Leave all other options as is.

  4. On the Spatial Reference System tab, set the Spatial Reference System to ECEF.

  5. Complete the remaining tabs (Extent and Destination), then click Submit to begin the production.

  6. Once processing is complete, go to the output directory and compress the exported Scene folder into a .zip file.

Refer to this document on how to compress the Scene folder.

  7. Upload the zip file to SKAND and create a 3D mesh layer for your data.
