Creating your exams early in SmarterProctoring helps students prepare, plan ahead, and secure the right proctoring option—whether it’s live virtual, face-to-face, or automated.

Some proctoring methods require students to schedule appointments ahead of time, so giving them early access to exams ensures they have enough time to meet all deadlines successfully.

Why Early Exam Creation Matters

Students using any of the following modalities need time to view the exam, select a proctor, and schedule their session:

  • Live Virtual Proctoring

  • Face-to-Face Testing Centers (including school or professional centers)

  • Face-to-Face with an Individual Proctor

These proctoring options require advance scheduling. While the exam may take place in a testing center or with a live proctor, the entire scheduling process happens inside SmarterProctoring.

Students often need to:

  • View available testing dates and times

  • Choose a proctor or testing center

  • Plan ahead for personal and technical needs – Students may need extra time to prepare if they don’t have daily access to reliable internet, a compatible computer, or a private testing space. They may also need to make arrangements such as requesting time off work or coordinating care for children or family members.

  • Confirm their appointment ahead of the exam window

The earlier an exam is created and published, the sooner students can begin this scheduling process—reducing stress and ensuring availability.

Recommended Timing

We recommend creating and publishing your exam in SmarterProctoring at least 2 weeks in advance of the exam window. This gives students enough time to:

  • See all proctoring options available to them

  • Schedule with their preferred or assigned proctor

  • Troubleshoot any issues before the test day

Tips for Setting Up Exams

When creating your exam in SmarterProctoring:

  • Choose the correct modality (automated, live virtual, testing center, or individual proctor)

  • Define a clear exam window with appropriate open/close times

  • Add instructions or materials that students or proctors will need

  • Consider offering a practice exam to help students get familiar with the system How to Create a Practice Exam – Step-by-Step Guide
