The IRS has rejected the return due to a mismatch between the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) in Schedule A (Form 8936) compared to the e-File database. To fix this, refer to your Time of Sale report and resubmit the return with the correct details.

This rejection often appears alongside SA-F8936-047 and SA-F8936-048.

🔎 Possible Reasons for This Rejection:

  • The VIN may contain a typo in Schedule A (Form 8936).

  • The IRS database may not be updated if the dealer has not submitted the required vehicle details to the IRS Energy Credits Online (ECO) system.

✅ Steps to Resolve:

  1. Verify the VIN – Double-check that the VIN is entered correctly on Schedule A.

  2. Confirm Dealer Submission – If the VIN is correct, contact the dealer to ensure they have uploaded the vehicle purchase details to the IRS ECO system.

If the dealer has not yet submitted the information, the taxpayer has two options:

  • Wait until the IRS updates its records before filing the return.

  • File the return without Form 8936 and later submit an amended return once the IRS has the necessary data to process the credit.
