Reject Code: F7004-904-01
The tax year end date ('TaxPeriodEndDt' in the Return Header) on Form 7004 must match the data in the e-file database, unless one of the checkboxes on Line 5b, such as "Initial Return," "Final Return," or "Consolidated return to be filed," is checked.
Reject code F7004-904-01 occurs when the entity's tax year end date on Form 7004 does not align with the IRS database.
Common reasons for this reject include:
The previous tax return was for a fiscal year, but fiscal year dates have not been entered.
The previous tax return was for a calendar year, but fiscal year dates were entered.
This is the business's first year, but the actual start and end dates, along with the indication that it is the initial return, have not been provided.
Initial Return: If this extension request is for the entity's first year and it wasn’t in operation the entire year, you need to correct the date entry on Form 7004. In the Form 7004 menu in the entity’s return in TaxSlayer Pro:
Indicate that this is not a calendar year entity by selecting "Calendar Year" and answering "No" to the question asking if it's a calendar year.
Enter the fiscal year beginning and ending dates:
Beginning date: The official start date of the entity.
End date: For a calendar year entity, the end date should be 12/31/20xx, or for a fiscal year entity, the last day of the month other than December.
Finally, after entering the dates, select "Reason if Tax Year Less Than 12 Months" and choose "Initial Return" to explain why the return covers less than a full year.
Caveats:
If this is not the first year the business is filing, confirm with the business whether they operate on a fiscal or calendar year.
The date range from 1/1/20xx to 12/31/20xx should not be entered in the fiscal year field; those dates are for a calendar year entity.
If the dates are correct and the reject persists, contact the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933 for assistance regarding the date range rejection.
