What Causes This Rejection?

Reject Code R0000-118-01 occurs when the IRS does not recognize the Electronic Return Originator (ERO) status of the filer. This happens when an EFIN (Electronic Filer Identification Number) was mistakenly registered as an Online Provider instead of an ERO.

If the first two digits of the EFIN in the IRS Submission Manifest are 10, 21, 32, 44, or 53, then the Return Header must have the value "OnlineFiler", which is incompatible with an ERO.

How to Fix the Error

  1. Verify how the EFIN was registered with the IRS.

  2. If you mistakenly selected Online Provider instead of ERO, you will need to correct this.

  3. Contact the IRS E-file Help Desk to request assistance in updating your EFIN status so it can be used for ERO filing.

Once your EFIN is corrected, you should be able to file returns electronically without encountering this rejection.
