Before submitting your tax return, ensure that all information is accurate and complete. Even if someone else prepares your return, you are responsible for its content, and any errors may cause delays in processing.
The following checklist can help you avoid common mistakes:
Filing electronically increases accuracy compared to mailing a paper return. The e-file system detects common mistakes and rejects incorrect submissions, allowing you to make corrections before resubmitting. For more details, visit File your tax return.
Ensure that your name, taxpayer identification number, and current address, including ZIP code, are correctly printed on your return.
Select only one appropriate filing status. See What is my filing status?
Verify that dependent information is entered correctly, including checking the box if a dependent qualifies for the child tax credit or credit for other dependents.
Enter names and taxpayer identification numbers exactly as they appear on official documents. If a name change has occurred, contact the Social Security Administration at SSA.gov or call 800-772-1213.
Report income on the correct lines and attach Schedule 1 (Form 1040) if additional income and adjustments are required.
Accurately calculate deductions and credits, placing them on the correct lines and attaching necessary schedules or forms.
Use parentheses for negative amounts where applicable.
If taking the standard deduction and indicating age 65 or older or blindness, confirm that the correct deduction is applied. See How much is my standard deduction?
Ensure the tax is calculated correctly. If using tax tables, verify that the appropriate column is used for the selected filing status.
Sign and date the return. If filing jointly, both spouses must sign and date.
If issued an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), refer to the form instructions and Get an identity protection PIN (IP PIN).
Attach Copy B of each Form W-2 received from employers. If multiple jobs were held, combine wage and withholding amounts from all Forms W-2.
Attach Form 1099-R if it includes federal tax withholding.
Include all required schedules and forms in the order indicated in the upper right-hand corner.
Use the correct mailing address specified in the tax form instructions.
Ensure the envelope has sufficient postage.
If tax is owed, make a payment using an available method. For more information, refer to Make a payment and Topic No. 158.
If due a refund and opting for direct deposit, verify the routing and account numbers of your financial institution.
Keep a copy of the signed return and all attached schedules for personal records.
