The Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) is a valuable tax benefit available to eligible students pursuing post-secondary education, especially graduate students or those taking courses to improve job skills. This guide walks you through how to claim the LLC in TaxSlayer using a valid Form 1098-T.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Continue from the Income Page
Scroll down and click “Continue” to move beyond the income section.

  2. Access the Education Credits Section
On the next screen, click “Begin” next to “Credits”.

  3. Select the Student
Choose the individual listed on the 1098-T form who was enrolled in school.

  4. Confirm 1098-T Presence
If the client provided a current-year 1098-T, click “Yes” to continue.

  5. Check Box 7 of the 1098-T
Click “Yes” if Box 7 is checked; otherwise, select “No”. Then "Continue".

  6. Enter School Information
Input the following exactly as shown on the 1098-T:

    • EIN (Box F)

    • School Name

    • Address & Zip Code

    • Ensure the city is accurate.

    • Then click on Continue

  7. Input Tuition and Other Details

    • Enter the tuition paid (Box 1).

    • If there's a value in Box 5 (Grants/Scholarships), enter that under the “Grants and Scholarships” section.

    • Include any qualified expenses not shown on the 1098-T, if applicable.

    • Proceed to "Continue". Once that's done, confirm information and then click on "Continue".

  8. Answer Eligibility Questions

    • Indicate whether the student is a graduate student.

    • Refer to Box 8 to confirm if the student was half-time or more.

    • Use Box 9 to answer whether the student completed their first four years.

    • Confirm this information with the client to ensure accuracy by Yes or No, then click on "Continue".

  9. System Recommendation
TaxSlayer will calculate and recommend the most appropriate credit. If the client is ineligible for the American Opportunity Credit, the system will assign the Lifetime Learning Credit if applicable.

  10. Review and Submit
Confirm all entered information and click “Continue” to save and proceed.

Key Reminders:

  • The LLC is available even if you’re not pursuing a degree perfect for professional development.

  • Unlike the AOTC, the LLC can be claimed indefinitely (no 4-year limit).
