Can an advisor run model delivery strategies at a custodian that lacks MTS support, while also opening an MTS account at a supported custodian — with everything consolidated into a single account in the UI?
No. This setup requires two separate accounts on the system:
Account 1 — the fixed-income strategies, held at the unsupported custodian as an SMA or a single-sleeve UMA
Account 2 — the model delivery strategies, held at a supported custodian
There is currently no way to consolidate these into one account view.
Note: MTS integration with unsupported custodians is in progress, but there is no confirmed timeline yet.
How does onboarding work for an account using this MTS construct?
From the advisor's side, the process is simple:
Add the UMA-eligible product to the target
Add the target to the account
Rebalance
The investment manager is notified of the new allocation the following business day.
A few things to keep in mind:
Some strategies are limited distribution only. If a strategy you're expecting isn't listed on the Investment Products page, contact your Client Support representative.
SMArtX does not automatically journal pre-existing fixed income holdings into the MTS sleeve. This only happens if specifically requested through Client Support before investment.
Which custodians require Prime Broker coding for MTS allocations to process?
Custodian | Prime Brokerage Requirements |
Schwab | Required — must be flagged on the Schwab Advisor portal (including any additional paperwork) before allocating to the strategy on SMArtX |
Fidelity | Required — applied by default |
Goldman Sachs Asset Management | Not required — clears DVP (Delivery Versus Payment) |
Need help? If you're unsure whether your account is configured correctly, contact Client Support before allocating to an MTS strategy.
