Setting up meal break deductions

Configuring automatic meal break deductions based on shift length.

Updated over 4 months ago

You can set up automatic deductions for meal breaks based on the length of an employee's shift.

When meal breaks are deducted

Meal break deductions are applied automatically when using the timesheet function or importing from timeclock systems.

Configuring meal break rules

  1. Navigate to Settings.

  2. Select the Timesheets tab.

  3. Configure the meal break settings.

Example: 0.5 hours (30 minutes).

Set how often the break will be deducted based on length of shift.

Example: Every 6 hours worked.

Per shift

Alternatively, you can set the break to be deducted once per shift rather than based on shift length.

Except on Saturday or Sunday

Set a rule that does not apply meal breaks on either Saturday or Sunday.

How it works

Once configured, when an employee's hours are entered via the timesheet or imported from a timeclock:

  1. The system calculates the total hours worked.

  2. If the hours meet the threshold, the meal break is automatically deducted.

  3. The net hours after the deduction are what the employee is paid for.

Example: Employee works 8 hours with a meal break rule of 0.5 hours every 6 hours.

The system records 8 hours worked, deducts 0.5 hours for the meal break, and pays the employee for 7.5 hours.
