Welcome to Speakable. Before assigning activities to students, you’ll need to set up your classrooms. This guide walks you through that process and explains the different ways to add students based on the systems your school or district uses.
When you create a classroom, you will be asked to choose how you want to add students. There are three options: Google Classroom, Clever, or a manual join link. The method you choose will determine how students are added and how they should log in. Please review the information below carefully to ensure your setup goes smoothly.
Step 1: Log In Using the Correct Method
If you're planning to use Google Classroom or Clever for rostering, it’s essential that you log in using the matching Single Sign-On (SSO) option on the Speakable login page:
For Google Classroom: click “Log in with Google”
For Clever: click “Log in with Clever”
Important: If you log in using the wrong method (e.g., you click "Log in with Google" but intend to use Clever), you won’t be able to access your roster or create synced classrooms correctly.
If you’ve already logged in using the wrong method, simply log out and log back in using the correct SSO option to continue.
To log out, click your name in the bottom-left corner of the Speakable dashboard, then select “Log out” from the menu.
Step 2: Create Your Classroom
After logging in, click “My Classrooms” in the left-hand menu
Click the “+ New Classroom” button
Choose how you want to add students:
Google Classroom
Clever
Join Link (Manual Add)
If you select Google Classroom:
You’ll be prompted to authorize access to your Google Classroom
Then, you’ll select one or more classes from your Google Classroom to import
Speakable will automatically name your Speakable classrooms to match your Google Classroom names
If you select Clever:
You’ll be prompted to select one or more sections from your Clever account
Speakable will automatically create the classrooms and name them using your Clever section names
If you select Join Link (Manual Add):
You will be prompted to enter a name for your classroom (e.g., Spanish 2 – Period 1)
After creating the class, you’ll receive a join link and class code to share with students
Once the classroom is created, you’ll be ready to assign activities and start collecting student responses.
Step 3: Understanding the Student Enrollment Methods
When you create a classroom in Speakable, you’ll choose how students will be added. Each method has different benefits and requirements. Below is an overview of how each one works, when to use it, and what to keep in mind.
Google Classroom
Best for schools using Google Classroom.
This is the most seamless experience for teachers and students, with support for roster syncing, assignment syncing, and grade passback.
You’ll select your Google Classroom sections during classroom creation.
Speakable will automatically create a class with the same name and sync the student roster.
Students must log in using “Log in with Google” to be placed in the correct class.
Speakable associates each student’s email address with their account for accurate roster management.
Roster Updates:
If your roster changes in Google Classroom (e.g. students are added or removed), click the "Sync" button in the top right corner of your Speakable classroom to refresh the roster. This must be done manually.
Clever
Best for schools that do not have the ability to sync with an LMS like Google Classroom or through an LTI integration.
Clever provides a centralized way to manage rosters, but does not support assignment syncing or grade passback.
You’ll select your Clever sections during classroom creation.
Speakable will create classrooms named after those sections and import the roster.
Students must log in using “Log in with Clever” to be correctly matched to the class.
Important Notes:
Clever does not share student email addresses with Speakable. Only first name and last initial are provided.
If a student logs in with Google or another method, they’ll create a duplicate account that won’t appear in your class.
Roster Updates:
Roster changes in Clever will not sync automatically. Use the "Sync" button in the top right corner of the classroom page to refresh your roster.
Join Link (Manual Add)
Best for schools not using centralized rostering or LMS integrations.
This option gives you complete control and is ideal for flexible setups, pilots, or districts without roster syncing tools.
You’ll enter a name for the classroom when you create it.
After creation, you’ll receive a unique join link and class code.
Share the link or code with students by email, LMS, or in class.
Students can log in with any method (Google, Clever, or email/password) and will be added to your classroom automatically after using the link.
Roster Management:
You can manually add or remove students from the class at any time. This method does not support automatic syncing with an LMS.
LTI Integrations (Canvas, Schoology, Brightspace, etc.)
Best for schools using LTI-compatible LMS platforms.
LTI integrations provide the most seamless experience and include:
Automatic classroom creation
Automatic roster syncing
Assignment syncing
Grade passback
Once a student launches a Speakable assignment from your LMS, they will be added to the appropriate class in Speakable automatically.
Setup Required:
LTI integrations must be configured by your district or school IT team. If you’re not sure whether your school is set up, please check with your admin or contact our support team.
