Following an account keeps it on your Home dashboard and, for leagues, feeds your Leaders tab. You can follow from several places and arrange your list however you like.
Ways to follow
From Explore search: search on the Explore tab, then follow a team, player or league from the results. See Finding leagues, teams and players.
From Following search: the Following search screen has Teams, Players and Leagues tabs and lets you follow directly from the results.
From a team or league page: open the team or program and tap Follow. Following a team shows "You're now following this team"; following a league shows "You're now following this League".
Re-ordering your following list
Go to the Home tab and find the Following section.
Tap Re-order.
Drag your followed players, teams or leagues into the order you want.
If you leave without saving, you'll see "Changes will not be saved.": confirm only if you want to discard your new order.

Following a league is what turns on your Leaders tab standings and rankings. See Leaders and standings.
