What keyboard shortcuts does the subtitle editor have? How do I undo an accidental deletion or edit?

Written by Chloe

Using keyboard shortcuts in the subtitle editor can make proofreading and editing much faster. Below is a list of the most common shortcuts, plus how to recover content you accidentally deleted or changed.

Common keyboard shortcuts

The following shortcuts work in the subtitle editor when the cursor is not in a text input field:

  • Play / pause: Spacebar.

  • Back 5 seconds: left arrow key (←).

  • Forward 5 seconds: right arrow key (→).

  • Find: Cmd + F on Mac; Ctrl + F on Windows.

  • Find and replace: Cmd + Option (Alt) + F on Mac; Ctrl + H on Windows.

  • Close the find / replace window: Esc.

  • Undo: Cmd + Z on Mac; Ctrl + Z on Windows.

  • Redo: Cmd + Shift + Z on Mac; Ctrl + Shift + Z or Ctrl + Y on Windows.

Accidentally deleted or changed something? How to get it back

If you accidentally delete a passage or make a change you want to take back while editing a transcript or subtitles, you can fix it right in the editor. There is no need to re-upload the file or recreate the project:

  1. The editor supports direct line-by-line editing, so you can retype the correct content in the affected subtitle line.

  2. Use the Undo feature: besides the keyboard shortcut (Cmd / Ctrl + Z), the editor's top toolbar also has "Undo" and "Redo" buttons. The buttons are clickable when there are steps to undo; when there is nothing to undo, they are grayed out (not clickable).

  3. Undo multiple steps in a row: you can press undo repeatedly to step back through several edits and recover earlier content.

💡 Please note: undo history is kept only for your current editing session. Refreshing the page or reopening the project clears the undo history, after which you can no longer use undo to step back through earlier changes. For important edits, double-check your content before leaving the page.
