If you cancel your health insurance, you must immediately update your Take Command account by notifying us of your coverage end date and uploading new proof of coverage if you enroll in a different plan, because your HRA reimbursements are tied to having active qualifying health insurance.
What should I do if I cancel my health insurance?
If you cancel your health insurance plan, you must take action in both your insurance account and your Take Command account.
Follow these steps:
Contact your insurance carrier or Marketplace to confirm cancellation
Confirm the exact coverage end date with your insurer
Save your cancellation confirmation for your records
Notify Take Command of your coverage termination date
Upload new proof of coverage if you enroll in a new plan
These steps ensure your reimbursement eligibility is updated correctly.
What happens to my HRA when I cancel my insurance?
Your HRA eligibility depends on having active Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC).
After cancellation:
Your reimbursements may be paused if you no longer have qualifying coverage
Claims tied to the canceled plan will not be reimbursed after the coverage end date
You may still submit eligible expenses incurred before your coverage ended (within allowable timelines)
You must enroll in a new qualifying plan to restart reimbursements
Why is updating coverage important?
Updating your coverage ensures:
Reimbursements are only paid for eligible months
Claims are not rejected due to missing coverage
Your HRA remains compliant with IRS rules
Your account reflects accurate insurance status
Active qualifying coverage is required for tax-free reimbursement.
How do I notify Take Command of my cancellation?
After canceling your health insurance with your carrier:
Sign in to your Take Command Member Portal.
Update your health insurance information to reflect the coverage end date.
Upload new proof of coverage if you enrolled in a different qualifying plan.
If you had a recurring premium reimbursement set up, cancel it in the Reimbursements section — otherwise submissions will continue for coverage you no longer have.
If the portal does not show an option to update your coverage or cancel a recurring premium, contact Customer Experience.
What happens to my reimbursements after I cancel my insurance?
Once your qualifying health insurance ends:
Future premium reimbursements will stop — you cannot receive HRA reimbursements for periods without active qualifying coverage.
You may still submit eligible expenses incurred before your coverage ended, within your plan's submission deadlines.
If you enroll in a new qualifying plan, upload proof of coverage to restart reimbursement eligibility.
To avoid a gap, try to have your new coverage start date align with or immediately follow your old plan's end date.
Does canceling insurance create a qualifying life event for new enrollment?
Voluntarily canceling your health insurance generally does NOT create a qualifying life event under ACA rules — you cannot use a voluntary cancellation to trigger a Special Enrollment Period on the marketplace. However, if your coverage ends involuntarily (such as losing job-based coverage or losing Medicaid eligibility), this may qualify as a QLE.
Contact Customer Experience before canceling your plan to confirm the coverage and QLE implications for your specific situation.
