QSEHRA: How to waive coverage during enrollment

This article is for employees using Take Command who want to opt out of QSEHRA participation during enrollment or re-enrollment.

Written by Support

You can waive QSEHRA coverage during onboarding or re-enrollment by selecting the option to skip or decline reimbursement setup, which removes you from receiving QSEHRA premium reimbursements for that plan year.

What does it mean to waive QSEHRA coverage?

Waiving QSEHRA coverage means:

  • You choose not to participate in the QSEHRA benefit

  • You will not receive premium or medical expense reimbursements

  • Your employer will not include you in monthly reimbursement reports

  • You are treated as not enrolled in the HRA for the plan year

You can still maintain your own health insurance coverage outside of the QSEHRA.

When can I waive QSEHRA coverage?

You can waive coverage:

  • During initial onboarding

  • During annual re-enrollment

  • When your employer first offers the QSEHRA

  • When you are prompted to confirm your reimbursement election for the plan year

Waiving is only available during designated enrollment flows.

How do I waive QSEHRA coverage?

To waive coverage during enrollment or re-enrollment:

  1. Log in to your Take Command employee onboarding or re-enrollment flow

  2. Proceed to the Reimbursement Amount or coverage election step

  3. Select the option to Skip, Decline, or Waive coverage for this year

  4. Confirm your selection when prompted

  5. Submit and complete the enrollment process

Once completed, you will not be enrolled in QSEHRA reimbursements for that plan year.

What happens after I waive coverage?

After you waive QSEHRA coverage:

  • You will not receive monthly allowance contributions

  • You cannot submit reimbursement claims under the QSEHRA

  • You will not appear on reimbursement reports for active participation

  • Your employer will treat you as opted out for that benefit year

Waiver applies only to the current plan year unless you re-enroll later.

Can I still get health insurance if I waive QSEHRA?

Yes.

Waiving QSEHRA does not affect your ability to:

  • Enroll in individual Marketplace plans

  • Keep existing health insurance coverage

  • Use a spouse’s employer-sponsored plan

  • Purchase private individual coverage

However, you will not receive QSEHRA reimbursements for any plan.

Important tax consideration if you waive coverage

If you waive QSEHRA coverage:

  • You are no longer receiving an employer health benefit

  • You may choose to claim the Premium Tax Credit (PTC) for Marketplace coverage if eligible

  • You cannot receive both QSEHRA reimbursements and PTC for the same coverage period

If you previously had QSEHRA and received affordability determinations, changing elections may affect tax eligibility.

What does NOT happen when you waive coverage?

Waiving QSEHRA does NOT:

  • Cancel your health insurance plan

  • Notify your insurance carrier

  • Affect your eligibility for other employer benefits

  • Automatically remove you from coverage you already purchased

You must manage your insurance separately from your QSEHRA election.
