What Is SKU and Why It Matters

Written by Jums

Overview

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is a unique code assigned to each product in your store. It helps you identify, track, and manage products more efficiently.

While SKU is optional on TELA, using it is strongly recommended β€” especially if you sell multiple products or variations.

What Does an SKU Look Like?

An SKU can be any structured code you create.

Examples:

  • BAG-BLK-01

  • SHOE-RED-42

  • TSHIRT-WHT-L

  • MUG-PRINT-2024

There is no single required format β€” but consistency is important.

Why SKUs Matter

Using SKUs helps you:

1. Track Inventory Accurately

Each product or variation has a unique identifier, reducing confusion.

2. Avoid Duplicate Listings

You can easily identify if a product has already been created.

3. Manage Product Variations

If you sell different sizes, colors, or models, SKUs help distinguish them.

For example:

  • SHOE-BLK-41

  • SHOE-BLK-42

  • SHOE-WHT-41

4. Simplify Reporting

SKUs make it easier to track which specific products are selling most.

Best Practices for Creating SKUs

  • Keep them short and readable

  • Use consistent formatting

  • Include product type, color, size, or model

  • Avoid special characters

Example format:
PRODUCTTYPE-COLOR-SIZE

When You Should Definitely Use SKUs

You should use SKUs if:

  • You sell products in multiple sizes

  • You sell products in multiple colors

  • You manage a large inventory

  • You want more structured reporting

SKUs improve organization and reduce operational errors.
