Quick Summary: Select the correct BOM-level filter when creating a Policy Override to target intended items without affecting others.

For necessary background, please preread How To: Create a Policy Override Rule before proceeding with this article.

Why It Matters

Applying inventory policy changes to manufactured items often requires more nuance than applying them to simple purchased products. For example, you may want to set a specific lead time for all your final products but not for the intermediate components. The BOM-specific policy override filters give you the precise control to do this.

BOM Filter Options

The filter is based on an item's position in the BOM hierarchy and its relationship to other items.

  • All manufactured items: This filter selects any item that is produced via a bill of materials. It includes both sub-assemblies and pure finished goods.

  • Only sub-assembly items: This filter selects only manufactured items that are also used as components to make another, higher-level item.

  • Only finished items: This filter selects only manufactured items that are not used to make any other item.

BOM Structure And Filtering Options

Below is an illustration of a BOM structure.

  • Top row - Pure finished goods: See the green highlight in the image below. You would select the Only finished items filter if you would like to apply a policy override to this group of items only.

  • Middle rows - Semi-finished goods: See the blue highlight in the image below. You would select the Only sub-assembly items filter if you would like to apply a policy override to this group of items only.

  • Bottom row - Pure raw materials: See the olive highlight in the image below. Currently, there is no filter available to apply a policy override to this specific group of items. However, you can create an override for a specific supplier.

⚠️ Watchouts

No pure raw material filter: There is currently no filter available to apply a policy override only to pure raw materials (the items on the bottom row of a BOM). However, you can still apply overrides to these items by using other filters, such as filtering by a specific supplier.
