Introduction

The TetherBox will automatically power up after a power cut. It will also automatically reboot every 3 hours while offline. This usually means that by default, you should not need to reboot the TetherBox manually.

With that said, in truly unattended situations, there may be other external factors that cause various devices to misbehave and stop operating. TetherX have integration with TP-Link Kasa smart plugs, to address those situations and to automatically power cycle routers, switches and even your TetherBox.

How does it work with a TetherBox?

The Kasa smart plug can be configured to automatically power cycle devices (including the TetherBox), should your TetherBox disconnects from the cloud for a prolonged period of time. The idea is to reduce (or eliminate) visits to the site for simple things such as restarting a router. It also allows you to manually switch any mains powered devices on/off remotely with the TetherX interface or the Kasa app.

The TetherBox creates a schedule for the smart plug to power cycle the unit and other devices. So even if your TetherBox is switched off, the smart plug will still keep operating. If your TetherBox is online and working as expected, it will keep changing the schedule to prevent the plug from powering devices off.

The smart plug connects to either the Local WIFI or the TetherBox Built-In Wifi (Tetherbox Pico and older 5/10 units only).

Getting started with Kasa smart plug

1. Get a supported device (HS100, HS110, KP303)
https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/smart-plug/hs100/

2. Connect the device to the appropriate power strip sockets.
- TetherBox (Plug 1)

- Router (Plug 2)
- POE switch or any device you would like to restart (Plug 3)

Here is an example of the connected devices:

Great! Now the hardware is fully setup, it's time to connect your Kasa smart plug to your local Wifi.

3. Download the Kasa app and create an account.

4. Activate your account via email.

5. Plug the smart plug into a socket.

6. Check that the plug is flashing orange/green.

7. With your phone connect to the smart plug’s wifi.

8. Type in the wifi password of your current location (WIFI_Name).

It is important that smart plug is on the same local network as TetherBox.

You have two options:

- Connect the plug to the Local WIFI

- Connect the plug to the TetherBox WIFI (TetherBox Pico and older 5/10 units only)

9. Next, you need to go to your TetherBoxes page, tap on the Edit button, and select Smart Plug IP from the list.

10. Once this is done, you will be able to see Plug Status on the agent show page in the Smart Plug Info tab.
