Positive Response and Its Importance

What is a Positive Response?

The Positive Response system is a communication tool that allows utility members to notify excavators about the status of their locate requests. This ensures excavators know whether underground utilities have been marked before excavation.


Why are Positive Responses Important?

  • Clear Communication – Excavators receive confirmation on whether underground utilities are marked, unmarked, or not in conflict.

  • Safety & Compliance – Knowing the status of underground utilities helps prevent accidental damage and ensures safe digging.

  • Tracking & Documentation – Utility members record and update the status of each locate request, creating a clear history of responses.

Using Positive Response helps both excavators and utility members work together efficiently while reducing risks and delays.


Types of Positive Responses

Utility members can provide different types of responses, such as:


No Conflict – No underground utilities are present in the requested dig area.
🚩 Facilities Marked – Utilities have been marked, and excavation can proceed with caution.
⚠️ In Conflict – A utility representative must be on-site during excavation.
Locate Delayed – Additional time is needed before marking can be completed.
