Setting Up & Editing Installment Plans

Installment plans let you split a project total into a fixed number of payments — ideal for bigger design projects, like branding or web work, that stretch out over a few months. Here's how to set one up, edit it, and manage it from start to finish.

Setting Up an Installment Plan

  1. Go into a project → Invoicing → New Invoice.

  2. Add your line item(s) — the item title, quantity, and price — for the project or deliverable this installment plan covers.

  3. Under Invoice type, select Installments ("For specified payment plans").

  4. Fill out the settings under Installment Plan:

    • Title — Name it after the project or deliverable (e.g. "Brand + Website Redesign") so it's easy to identify later.

    • # of installments — How many payments the total will be split into.

    • Days between payments — How many days apart each installment is due.

  5. Finish filling out the rest of the invoice as usual — payment methods, tax, etc.

Finalizing the Plan

Before any invoices are generated or sent, you'll need to finalize the plan:

  1. Click Finalize on the banner at the top of the invoice.

  2. Confirm who the invoices should be sent to. (If you've already assigned a billing contact in your project settings, their email will be pre-loaded here for you.)

  3. Review the plan details carefully — total payments, days apart, and amount per payment — along with the due date and amount of the first invoice.

  4. Click Confirm.

📌 Once a plan is finalized, the line item totals and number of installments can't be changed — so this is the moment to double-check everything. After confirming, your installment invoices are created and the first one is either sent or scheduled dependent on it's assigned due date.

Reviewing & Editing an Invoice in an Installment Plan

Opening any invoice that's part of an installment plan shows a visual breakdown of the whole plan, so you can see exactly what you're changing before you change it.

What you'll see:

  • The full payment plan across the top. Every installment is laid out with its due date, amount, and status (Sent, Upcoming, Paid, etc.). The invoice you're currently viewing is highlighted in black.

  • An "Apply edits to" toggle, right below that, with two options:

    • Just this invoice — changes stay on this one invoice only. The rest of the plan is untouched.

    • This and [X] future invoices — changes carry forward to every unpaid invoice after it.

📆 The due date on any individual invoice can always be adjusted, regardless of which option you choose.

Need to see the plan as a whole? Click View installment plan, right there in the info box (or from the invoice's Settings sidebar).

Managing Your Installment Plans

You can view every installment plan across all your projects in one place: go to Financial from your dashboard, then the Installments tab. Each plan shows:

  • Status: Scheduled (no invoices sent yet), In progress (at least one invoice has gone out), Overdue (at least one invoice is overdue), or Completed (all invoices have been fully paid)

  • Which project it's assigned to

  • The total amount and number of installments

  • Days between payments

  • How many payments have been made (and how many remain)

  • The next payment date

  • A visual progress bar showing paid, sent/awaiting payment, overdue and upcoming installments at a glance

Click into a plan to see full details — total, amount paid, next payment date, created date — along with a table of every invoice in the plan and its individual status. Click View invoices to see them, or use the "…" menu for more options.
