Reapplying for your licence
If your ban was for longer than 56 days, you’ll have to reapply for your licence before getting back on the road. The DVLA should send you a D27 renewal form 56 days before your ban ends, or 90 days if you’re considered a high-risk offender.
If your address or title have changed since your driving ban, you'll need to make sure you update these too.
If you don’t receive a form, you can request one from your local Post Office or order one online.
Retaking your driving test
The court will have told you if you need to retake or driving test, or take an extended test, when you got banned.
You’ll also need to do this if:
Your licence was revoked within two years of passing your test
If your provisional licence was cancelled after you passed your test but before you’d sent off for your full driver’s licence
In both cases, you’ll need to retake both the theory and practical parts of the test.
Tips and advice
Unless someone else has been driving your car, you'll need to:
Apply for road tax using your V5C
Organise insurance – see our advice on getting insurance with a driving conviction.
Book your car in for an MOT if needed
If your car’s been sat still for a long time, consider getting a thorough service if you can to make sure it's still in good working condition.
Being off the road for a long time might make you feel nervous about driving again – a refresher course can help re-sharpen your driving skills. Lots of instructors offer these.
