[D2L] User Guide: Passing Back Grades & Feedback

Best practices to ensure smooth pass-back and common issues with grade pass-back

Updated today

Passing back grades and feedback to D2L is a sensitive but essential step. Please follow these steps to ensure everything is passed back correctly.

  1. If you've graded at least one submission, you can push grades back to D2L. Find the ellipsis (three dots) next to Final Submission Grading & Feedback and then click on Push Grades/Feedback to LMS. If you have trouble finding it, look at the screenshot below.

This option will be disabled if there are no graded submissions.

  2. Pushing all or only missing grades: you have an option once you start the push back process. You can either Push Missing Grades or Push All Grades back to the LMS. Push missing grades means only students without an evaluation on D2L will get their grades pushed back. Push All Grades will override (if any) evaluation and push all grades/feedback back to the LMS.

We recommend sticking to Push Missing Grades, especially if you have already done any manual grading on D2L or some grades were already passed back.

  3. If rubrics are not synced: you are going to see a pop up notifying you that the rubrics are not synced across D2L and TimelyGrader. This may happen for a few reasons:

    1. There is no rubric on D2L and there is a rubric on TimelyGrader. This is a common situation when instructors only want the overall grade to be shown to students. You may proceed by clicking on Continue.

    2. There are different rubrics on D2L and TimelyGrader. Any changes, no matter how small, will cause rubrics to become un-synced. If you'd like to resync them, click here to see the relevant help article.

    3. Rubrics look exactly the same on D2L and TimelyGrader. If you've made a change on either D2L or TimelyGrader and then revert back, it will still cause the rubrics to become un-synced. You will need to re-sync the assignment again.

  4. Grades getting pushed back: once you continue or if there is no Rubrics Are Not Synced pop-up, you should see a progress bar showing submissions being passed back. Do not exit or close this page during this process, as it may disrupt the pass-back process.

  5. Grades may be made available to students immediately: depending on visibility options on D2L, students may be able to see grades and feedback immediately. Please double-check these settings to ensure they are correct.

Remember that your assignments also need to be set up to be compatible with TimelyGrader. For more details, please read this article here.
