Ok! Ready for some science?

In your brain you have the circadian clock also called your body clock. The clock helps you to stay aligned with the 24 hour day/night cycle where you live. It makes sure that your body functions are in sync with the light dark phase.

To make sure that it get's clear information about the small changes in the day/night over the year, it uses light cues. In fact the circadian clock has it's own dedicated 'highway' from the retina in the eye, to make sure that it gets the necessary information.

Using the knowledge we have of the phase response curve and the importance of light to the circadian clock, we can design advice that shift you as effectively as possible to a new time zone.

If you look at science available today, there are really just two advice types that matter when it comes to shifting your circadian clock and thereby addressing the underlying cause of jet lag. And that's timed light exposure and timed use of the right type and dose of melatonin.

By exposing the circadian clock to light and melatonin, we can accurately control how much we want to move it during each 24 hour cycle.

On top of that we make sure to design our advice in accordance with your chronotype, itinerary and normal sleep pattern. Your chronotype is central, as it describes the length of your individual day/night cycle. Early birds have cycles shorter than 24 hours and night owls have cycles longer than 24 hours. This will define both the fine details, but could also determine wether we send your clock west or east around the globe.

We are not bound to let your circadian clock travel in the same direction as your body, and it might be more effective to shift you the opposite way of your flights.

We use your trip details and sleep pattern to design the advice to be practical and easy to follow in real life.

Lastly we also design the advice to manipulate your sleep drive to make sure that you can sleep when we ask you to 😊
