Best Practice

The best way to ensure reliable recording in Google Meet, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams, is with auto-recording. Enable auto-recording from your preferences 👇

PRO TIP: You can record without the tl;dv bot by using the built-in recorder in Google Meet, Zoom, or MS Teams, and sending the recordings to tl;dv with Zapier. Learn how in this article.

General troubleshooting

Check this list first for some quick tips.

  1. Do you have auto-recording enabled?
If auto-recording is disabled in your preferences, tl;dv will not try to join the meeting unless you manually add it with the Chrome extension or the desktop app.

  2. Has the meeting started?
tl;dv will only join at the time the meeting was scheduled - If you join a meeting early, just wait for the meeting start time and allow the tl;dv bot to enter from the waiting room.

  3. Has someone else joined the meeting?
tl;dv will stay in the meeting for 10 minutes after joining. If no other participant has joined by this time, the meeting will not be recorded.

  4. Is someone else already using tl;dv in the meeting?
There can only ever be one tl;dv bot present in a meeting, so if someone else has already joined with tl;dv you should request that they share their recording with you.

  5. Did the tl;dv bot wait for more than 10 minutes?
After entering the waiting room, the tl;dv bot will wait for 10 minutes. If it’s not allowed to enter the meeting in that time, the meeting will not be recorded.

  6. Is the meeting an all day event?
tl;dv has a max recording time of 3 hours, and will not join meetings marked as “all day”.

  7. Is it a webinar?
tl;dv doesn’t currently work with webinars.

  8. Do you use a VPN or Ad blocker?
If joining with the desktop app, or the Chrome extension, VPNs and Ad blockers can cause issues for tl;dv - try again with them disabled.

Tip: If tl;dv still isn’t joining your meetings refer to the provider-specific steps below. 👇

Which provider do you use?

Each meeting provider has different settings and features that affect how tl;dv can record your meetings. Jump to the right section with one of these options:

Google Meet

If tl;dv isn’t joining your Google Meet, check the following settings.

Organization settings:

  • Go to your meeting provider's admin settings

  • Click on “Domain”

  • Choose “All users (including users not signed in with a Google account)”:

Meeting room settings:

  • If the meeting requires a login to prevent anonymous guests, tl;dv will not be able to join the meeting.

  • To resolve this, click on the Host controls in the bottom right corner of your Google Meet window. Scroll down to "Meeting access type" and select the "Open" checkbox:

Zoom

If you want to invite tl;dv into your meeting but find an error message that tells you to update your meeting provider workspace settings, here are the steps to fix this:

On the homescreen of your Zoom Workplace app:

  • Access your Personal Meeting ID settings

  • Next to "New meeting" open the dropdown menu with your Personal Meeting ID number

  • Click on PMI Settings

  • Disable the option "Only authenticated users can join"

On the Zoom website/web app:

  • Click on Meeting

  • Click on Personal Room

  • Click "Edit" at the bottom

  • Disable the option "Require authentication to join"
