Tock: Calculating Tax on Service Charges

Written by Agent Support Bot

Question

  • How do I correct a tax calculation in Tock?

  • How can I fix an incorrect tax amount on a check in Toast?

Answer

When you set up a pre-paid dining experience through Tock, the total charges for the guest will be calculated based on the menu options and service charges included in the experience. These charges often include gratuities, which will be added to the check. If the gratuity is calculated differently in Tock compared to Toast, the amount on the check may differ from the payment received, resulting in the check remaining open due to an outstanding balance.

Tock calculates gratuity based on the pre-tax total of the check. In contrast, Toast calculates gratuity according to a setting found in the Other Setup section under UI Options. If this setting is different from Tock's, the checks may be out of balance and will remain open until the payment is corrected.

For example:

From the payments section, you can see that an employee entered an additional Tock Other Payment to cover the $3.45 difference caused by the calculation of the Gratuity after tax.

To correct the tax calculation in Toast, follow the steps below:

  1. Access the location in Toastweb, navigate to the Other Setup section, and select the UI Options.

  2. Scroll to the Tipping Section and edit the Tip/Tax Setting to Calculate Tip Before Tax.

  3. Select Save and then Publish.

Note: This will not retroactively correct previously submitted checks, but will prevent future checks from being affected by the same issue.

To correct any checks that have already been entered in Toast, the location can reopen the check, remove the gratuity, and then re-add the gratuity to calculate the amount before tax.
