Why is a service charge or gratuity being automatically added?
Answer
There are three ways to configure service charges to apply to checks automatically. Use each section below to navigate to these configurations in Toast Web and check if they're the issue.
Check if the service charge is being automatically applied to all checks opened in a certain dining area.
In Toast Web, navigate to Front of house > Service areas & tables > Service areas.
Look in the Auto-apply Gratuity column. If any list Yes when they should not:
Select the name of the service charge in the Name column.
Under the Auto-applied Gratuity section, change it to No.
If all auto-apply gratuity is correctly configured, proceed to the next step. For more information on auto-apply gratuity, see this Toast Central article: Set Up and Apply Auto-Gratuity.
Check if the service charge is being applied to all checks over a specific monetary value.
In Toast Web, navigate to Payments > Checks & receipt setup > Service charges & fees.
Select the fee being applied in the Name column.
Look for Apply After Amount Threshold.
If this is set to 0.00, move to step 3.
If this is set to a value greater than 0.00, review the grey note and consider changing this configuration.
Check if the service charge is being applied to all checks with a certain dining option behavior.
In Toast Web, navigate to Payments > Checks & receipt setup > Service charges & fees.
Select the fee being applied in the Name column.
Look for the three Yes/No toggles labelled Delivery?, Takeout?, and Dine-In?. You can hover over the Information icons for more information.
Change the toggle to No if you don't want service charges to automatically apply to orders with one of these dining options behaviors. For more information, see this Toast Central article: Set Up Custom Dining Options.
