If the Save Button Is Grayed Out Across Multiple Pages

When the Save button is gray on more than one page, the cause is usually your web browser. Work through these steps in order:

  1. Log out of Toast Web and log back in.

  2. Clear your browser history, including cookies and cache.

  3. Open Toast Web in an Incognito or private browsing window.

  4. Switch to a different web browser. For the best experience, use Google Chrome on a desktop computer.

You should now see the Save button turn blue when you make a change. If it does, your changes will save normally.

Note: Toast Web works best on Google Chrome on a desktop computer. For the full list of recommended browsers, see the Toast Web: Supported Browsers for Desktop, Mobile, and Tablet article.

If the Save Button Is Grayed Out on a Specific Page or Action

When the Save button is gray on only one page or for one action but works elsewhere, the cause is usually permissions. The page is visible to you, but you do not have the permission needed to save changes there.

Ask your restaurant's Toast administrator to review your user permissions for that page. For a list of permissions and what each one controls, see the Permissions Reference Guide article.

Note: If a page or setting does not appear for you at all, that is also a permissions issue. See the Why is the New Order button not visible? article for an example.

If the Save Button Stays Gray When Creating an Item With Variations

When you create a new item with variations (for example, a retail item with sizes) and the Save button stays gray instead of turning blue, the variation setup may not be accepted by the page yet.

Try these workarounds:

  1. Change the item's category, save the item, then change the category back if needed.

  2. Remove the variations, select Done, then go back and reselect the variations you want.

If the Save button turns blue after either step, your item will save normally.

Before You Contact Customer Care

If the Save button is still grayed out after you have tried the browser steps, confirmed your permissions, and tried the variation workarounds, the issue needs further review.

Before you reach out, have this information ready so Toast Customer Care can help faster:

Then contact Toast Customer Care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my save button grayed out and won't turn blue?

A grayed out Save button that won't turn blue is usually caused by a browser issue or a missing permission. Start by logging out and back in, clearing your cache and cookies, and switching to Google Chrome on a desktop computer. If the button is gray on only one page, have your Toast administrator check your permissions for that page.

Also asked as:

  • Why is the save button grey instead of blue?

  • Why can't I click save in Toast Web?

  • The save button is grayed out, how do I fix it?

The save button is gray but I have all the right permissions. What now?

If the Save button is gray and your permissions are already correct, clear your browser cache and cookies and try Google Chrome on a desktop computer first. If you are creating an item with variations, adjust the category or reselect the variations. If it is still gray after that, contact Toast Customer Care.

Why is the save button grayed out only when I create items with variations?

A Save button that stays gray only when you create an item with variations is usually because the variation setup has not been accepted by the page yet. Try changing the item's category, or remove and reselect the variations, then save. If it still does not turn blue, contact Toast Customer Care.
