Question
Where are gross sales displayed in Toast Web reports? What does the gross sales calculation include (for Ireland and U.K.)?
Answer
The Sales Summary and Product Mix reports include an updated calculation for gross sales based on customer feedback. Updates to other reports are coming in the future, but at this time the gross sales values on other reports will not match.
On the new Sales Summary and Product Mix reports, sales are calculated as follows for restaurants located in Ireland and the UK:
Total sales: includes value-added tax (VAT); discounts and refunds have not been deducted
Gross sales: includes VAT; discounts and refunds are deducted
Net sales: VAT, discounts, and refunds are all deducted
Total amount: gross sales + tips and service charges
Please note that gross sales and net sales can differ between Sales Summary and Product Mix, as Sales Summary uses the accounting standard for refunds (refunds are applied to the date of the order), whereas Product Mix uses the operational standard (refunds are applied based on the date of the refund). This can cause discrepancies between the two reports.
Here’s an example of what it could look like on the new Sales Summary report:
To learn more about the new Sales Summary report, see this Toast Central article: Sales Summary Report Overview. To learn more about the new Product Mix report, see this Toast Central article: Product Mix (PMIX) Report Overview.
At this time, the other Toast Web sales reports (including the legacy Sales Summary report) calculate sales like this:
Gross sales: VAT has been deducted; discounts and refunds have not been deducted
Net sales: VAT, discounts, and refunds have all been deducted.
